Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda

Southwestern Uganda Best Time: Year-round, best June-September

About This Destination

Where Volcanoes Meet Gorillas on Uganda’s Southern Frontier

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, but one of its most dramatic. Nestled in the Virunga Mountains along the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, it is a landscape of towering volcanic peaks, misty bamboo forests, and rich Afro-montane vegetation.

This is one of only two places in Uganda where you can track mountain gorillas, making it a highly exclusive and peaceful alternative to Bwindi. Because it receives fewer visitors, gorilla trekking here often feels more private and intimate, with the volcanic scenery adding a dramatic backdrop to the experience.

The park is also home to golden monkeys; a rare and playful primate species found only in this region. Golden monkey tracking is fast-paced and exciting as these energetic animals leap through bamboo forests in large groups.

Beyond wildlife, Mgahinga offers some of Uganda’s best hiking experiences. Visitors can climb the volcanic peaks of Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura, each offering stunning views over Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. These hikes provide a unique combination of adventure, scenery, and physical challenge.

Cultural encounters with the Batwa people are another highlight of Mgahinga, offering insight into the traditional forest life of Uganda’s indigenous communities.

The park is best visited during the dry seasons from June to August and December to February, although trekking is possible year-round.

Accommodation is found in nearby Kisoro, with options ranging from luxury lodges overlooking the Virunga Volcanoes to mid-range and budget stays.

At Roho Safaris Uganda, Mgahinga is often combined with Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi for a complete southwestern Uganda circuit that blends gorillas, culture, and scenic beauty.

Mgahinga is small, dramatic, and unforgettable where volcanoes rise above the clouds and gorillas move silently through bamboo forests.
